SURF COAST

Savaii’s surf coast offers world class surfing. Aganoa surf resort is surfers paradise. Satuiatua Beach Fales has excellent snorkelling. The south coast volcanic landscape has created an extraordinary coastline, travelling slowly and stopping for photo shots of sea arches and wild coastline, including the blowholes at Taga. This wild seascape is not suitable for swimming because of strong currents but stop at Afu Aau waterfall for a cooling swim.

ALOFAAGA BLOWHOLES

Some of the world’s more spectacular blowholes are located at Taga. When there is a strong swell from the south the water sprays up in a massive plume. The “coconut man” will ask for a fee to throw coconuts into the blowholes and these can be shot 60 or so metres into the air - agree on a price before the coconuts are thrown (often the asked price is around 20 tala)

There is a small fee payable to access the blowholes.

SOUTH COAST SEA ARCHES

Along the south coast of Savaii are several sea arches formed by the battering ocean. The vegetation on the seaside of the road blocks most of the spectacular view. If you see an opening in the vegetation between Taga blowholes and Nu’u Black Sand, stop, pull over and walk down to get a better view.

AFU AAU WATERFALL AND POOL

The beautiful Afu Aau Waterfall has crystal clear water running from the main waterfall into a large freshwater swimming hole fringed with ferns and tropical vegetation. The cool freshwater then flows into several smaller waterfalls and pools. The series of pools is a great place for a swim, picnic or just to sit quietly and contemplate nature. Afu Aau is a short drive from Salelologa; an easy stop on your way to the ferry.

MT TAFUA CRATER

Climbing Mt Tafua is an exhilarating experience for energetic and fit nature lovers. There are two craters and it is a fairly strenuous climb to the higher western crater which is the more scenic. Taking a local guide is recommended. The view from the top is impressive, looking out over the rainforest canopy below and with a panoramic view over savaii’s volcanic cone studded interior and down to local villages. Take the time to look for the diurnal Samoan Flying Fox and listen out for native pigeons.

PULEMELEI (TIA SEU) ANCIENT MOUND

No one knows the purpose of this ancient monument although its size indicates something of importance. The mound is inland and allegedly has been built over a number of years with probably a number of different purposes. Probably food gathering and preparing in the umu ti, maybe pigeon catching, possibly ceremonial or lookout purposes. There is interesting information online but the site is currently overgrown and inaccessible due to family disagreements that the site is not signposted, Warren Jopling a former Geologist excavator of the site has more information, ph Savaii Natural History Tours (phone 7506448).
